The OECS Commission and the Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO, are spearheading a statistical data program critical to the development of the Agriculture sector in the Region.

A workshop aimed at introducing and implementing the strategic plan for agriculture and rural statistics across OECS Countries was conducted in that regard. The strategic plan is a document for countries to support them in meeting medium to long-term goals for the strengthening and development of a well- coordinated and integrated agricultural and rural statistics system. The workshop forms part of the OECS Regional Strategy for Development of Statistics (RSDS).

Agricultural Specialist at the OECS Commission George Alcee says the project will strengthen statistical units within the OECS. “We are all aware of the continuing challenges faced by countries in relation to production of accurate, reliable, timely and relevant data to inform better decision making in agriculture and rural development as well as trade negotiation positions and for policy decision making. It is against this background that we sought support from the FAO in the transformation and modernization of the agriculture sector to improve evidence based information for making informed decisions. I would like to thank the FAO for responding positively to the support of OECS countries, in enhancing the capacities of the agriculture statistics in the OECS.” Alcee notes.

The three-day workshop focused on the gaps and pitfalls highlighted by key stakeholders in all countries. The strategic plan for agriculture and rural statistics will outline and propose the framework and long-term plan for the improvement of agricultural and rural statistics in each country. Head of the Statistical Services Unit at the OECS Commission Dr. Gale Archibald says the project will ultimately plant the seeds for a more evidence based approach to agricultural strategic planning.

“The data aspect of the Commission’s agricultural development agenda has not had focus for some time now, or perhaps despite efforts over the years we have not been successful. With the National Statistical Offices and the technical officers in the Ministries with responsibility for Agriculture, working together over three days, there is a promise of success this time around," Dr. Archibald unveils. The OECS Head of the Statistical Services Unit at the OECS Commission continues, "The Commission is very grateful to the FAO for supporting the OECS Commission with this initiative. The member states have committed to collaborate and work jointly on a common approach to agricultural development.”

The OECS Regional Strategy for Development of Statistics is the region’s statistical development road map for the advancement of statistics over the period 2017 to 2030.
