IICA hosts workshop on managing organic waste

THE OBJECTIVE IS TO STRENGTHEN THE RESILIENCE OF ECONOMIES VIA SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS.

The International Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), has collaborated with the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute to host an Organic Waste Management training workshop.

The two-day exercise focuses on capacity building and economic opportunities utilizing organic waste. The workshop is targeted at institutes responsible for the youth of Saint Lucia, as well as the Ministry of Agriculture, the Solid Waste Management Authority, farmers, and entrepeneurs.

At the event, Dr. Abimbola Abiola, Technical Specialist and Facilitator of the workshop, gave an overview of the nature of the training program.

Gregg C.E. Rawlins is the Representative in the Eastern Caribbean States for IICA. He noted that the motto for the delegation in Saint Lucia is People Focused Development.

“The objective of this initiative is to strengthen the resilience of economies through the adoption of innovative technologies and sustainable waste management systems in the Caribbean region,” he said.

Hon. Eziekel Joseph, Minister for Agricultue, Fisheries, Natural Resources and Cooperatives, said: “It is our intention to look at biowaste initially, and the different options for biowaste management; and later, we will look at composting.”

The key beneficiary states of the training include Saint Lucia, Belize, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana.
