The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC) has informed of a magnitude 5.2 earthquake which occurred near Dominica, at 10:01 a.m. on Jan. 8, 2020.

The epicentre of the earthquake was at 23 kilometres southeast of Roseau, Dominica and 66.km NNW of Fort De France Martinique. There was no report of damage in the impacted countries.

Further, on Jan. 7, 2020, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake devastated Puerto Rico leaving one dead and many others injured. It is said to be the strongest earthquake in Puerto Rico in over 100 years. This deadly earthquake happened just one day after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the island and was followed by several strong aftershocks. The Puerto Rican Governor have declared a state of emergency as the earthquake caused widespread power outages and major damage to buildings, landmarks and landslides. The earthquake has left numerous people homeless, no access to water causing hundreds to seek refuge at the different shelters.

These two earthquakes were part of a burst of seismic activity of over 500 tremors which impacted the region over a period of 10 days according to the US Geological Services. Geologists issued a warning that the aftershocks will continue for days to come.

UWI SRC is indicating that the level of activity is another indication that we are in a geologically active region and is cautioning persons to take all measures to be prepared. An earthquake gives no warning unlike a hurricane and persons need to take the threat seriously.

The UWI Seismic Research Center reported that the recent earthquakes around Puerto Rico and the rest of the region should cause us to develop a culture of safety towards all hazards, including seismic hazards.
