PUBLIC NEEDS TO EXERCISE GREATER RESTRAINT FOLLOWING POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS EVENTS.

The Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Mr. George Victorin, has confirmed that there were no major reports as a result of Tropical Storm Dorian on Aug. 27.

“We had a major fire at Vieux Fort, but it was not directly related to Tropical Storm Dorian. All in all, it was very quiet,” he said. He cautioned, however, that the public needs to exercise greater restraint following potentially hazardous events.

“Most persons adhered to the warning, but early Tuesday morning at about 6 a.m., there were quite a few persons on the roadways—motorists, as well as pedestrians—in some of the towns and cities. This was not advisable as we were still under a national shutdown and the all clear had not been given. These persons put themselves at unnecessary risk,” he said.

Saint Lucia was placed under mandatory shutdown from 6 p.m. on Aug. 26, on account of Tropical Storm Dorian which was predicted to turn into a hurricane. The “all clear” was issued at 10 a.m. on Aug. 27.

In a prepared statement on various social media platforms, Ms. Dorine Gustave, Director of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), advised the public to refrain from venturing out before the official "all clear" was given. The gap allows for first responders to furnish NEMO with preliminary reports confirming the presence, or dearth, of hazards.
