STAFF, PATIENT SAFETY NOT COMPROMISED DURING INCIDENT.

Executive Director of Victoria Hospital, Ms. Brenda Calixte, spoke yesterday on the occurrence of a collapsed ceiling at the Victoria Hospital on Saturday, Nov. 10.

The ceiling collapsed in a section of the maternity ward that housed the nurses station. There were no staff in the room during the incident.

Ms Calixte said: “On Saturday morning, the ceiling over the staff-based station on the maternity ward, collapsed. We know that the infrastructure is a very old one, and it is already compromised; so as a result the ceiling came down. During that time there was no one in the area, so staff and patient safety was not compromised. We had to evacuate the room adjacent to the nurses’ station. One patient was in there and that patient is safe.”

Ms. Calixte added that an assessment and repair of the damages will be immediate.

“We have since relocated the nursing staff station to the back of the ward, and we are currently assessing the damages,” she said. “We will be provided with an estimate so that we can get the work done with immediate effect.”
