Soufriere Square sees major improvements

Development in the west coast is moving at an increasingly high rate with a newly built Soufriere Beach Park, Farmers Market, Bus Terminal and just officially opened Soufriere Square.

    The redesigning of the Soufriere Square included installation of urban umbrellas, a water fountain and the Freedom monument. Parliamentary Representative for Soufriere, Hon. Herod Stanislaus expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the project. “I am extra proud and happy that we have been able to deliver to you a state of the art facility in the heart of Sulphur city and I believe that you the people of Soufriere ought to feel equally proud to have such a facility right here in downtown Soufriere. The new design should enhance soufriere’s sense of place be memorable and appeal strongly to the emotions of both visiors and locals, ” Stanislaus says. 

    The Prime Minister of Saint Lucia Hon. Allen M. Chastanet explains the economic developments in Soufriere will directly affect the economic development of the surrounding communities. “The standard of square that we would have delivered to the people of Soufriere would not have been in keeping with the rich history and you heard the beautiful singers come up here and tell us the story of the rich history of what Soufriere is about and people in the world want to know that story and we wanted that when  they come through he towen that we can now start seeing attractions develop around town that being able to take advantage of that opportunity,” The Prime Minister says. 

    The renovation of the Soufriere Square which began in 2016, was funded by the Government of the republic of China Taiwan under the Constituency Development Programme. Counsellor Bill Huang is the Chargé d'affaires, Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan).  “I have to say if it wasn’t for the relentless efforts and dedication of the hon prime minister Chastanet and minister stansilaus I wouldn’t have been here today and I believe there are more opportunities and we can come back here for more projects that saint lucia and Taiwan work together,” Huang unveils. 

    The opening ceremony of the Soufriere Square took place on Wednesday July 31st 2019.
