OAS Scholarships 2016/2017

The Organization of American States [OAS] is offering scholarships to nationals of member states for the academic year 2016/2017.  These scholarships are offered to pursue undergraduate or graduate studies (Bachelor’s Masters, or Doctoral degree) and/or graduate research leading to a degree at a university or higher learning institution in an OAS Member State, with the exception of his/her own sponsoring country.  Studies must be carried out on a full-time basis, and may be undertaken via on-site or on-line education, or a combination of both.   The scholarship is awarded for a period of no more than two (2) academic years.  

The broad areas of study for which applicants will be considered are listed below:

  • Education
  • Social Development and Creation of Productive Employment
  • Economic Diversification and Integration, Trade Liberalization and Market Access
  • Scientific Development and Exchange and Transfer of Technology
  • Strengthening of Democratic Institutions
  • Sustainable Tourism Development
  • Sustainable Development and the Environment
  • Culture

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for selection an applicant must:
1.    Be a citizen or permanent resident of Saint Lucia. 
2.    Possess the educational background and, if required, professional experience to be accepted into the requested academic program. 
3.    Be in good physical and mental health to complete the program successfully. 
4.    Possess the language competency to undertake studies in the language of the institution or country of study. 
5.    Select an area of study listed on the “Government of Saint Lucia List of Priority Areas for National Training”, which can be accessed on the Government of Saint Lucia website: www.stlucia.gov.lc
6.    As an undergraduate applicant, be already accepted and/or enrolled in the University where he/she plans to study for the last two years of the undergraduate degree.
7.    As a post graduate applicant, provide satisfactory scores for admission and standardized tests (GRE or GMAT), if required by the academic institution he/she wishes to attend. (Costs associated with these tests will be borne by the applicant). 

8.    Agree to return to reside in the sponsoring country for a period of no less than twenty-four (24) months after completing the program of study covered by the scholarship.  This also applies to on-line applicants. 

 Applicants should also note the following:
1.    The Graduate Scholarships are in two categories: 

  • Self-placed in a OAS-Non Consortium University
  • Self-placed in an OAS Consortium University

Preference continues to be given to applicants who select the “OAS-Placed” option, by seeking their own admission to an OAS Consortium University.  Applicants are therefore encouraged to select that scholarship option.

2.    The Undergraduate Scholarships are offered only as Self-Placed Scholarships, for the last two years of study leading to an undergraduate/ Bachelor’s degree.   

3.    In addition to the Government Scholarship Application Form, all applicants must complete the requisite OAS Scholarship Application Form online.  The forms and application procedures could be accessed from the links shown below:
