Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for appointment to the post of CONSULTANT PAEDIATRICIAN, in the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

     

RESPONSIBILITIES AND RELATIONSHIP

  1. To provide consultant services in Paediatrics which will facilitate the provision of appropriate, high quality services within the wider community setting including community health clinics and institutions. This includes appropriate clinical care, procedure determination, equipment evaluation, quality control, advice and support to clinical department and emergency support.
  2. To lead the management of paediatric patient care in the community and advise junior physicians and nurses.
  3. Required to respond whenever necessary to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health and Wellness, Chief Medical Officer, Medical Officer of Health or any other duly authorized officer on matters relating to work in progress.

 

DUTIES AND TASKS

To ensure highest standard of patient focused care:

  1. Diagnoses, investigates and appropriately treats patients within the clinical setting.
  2. Provides health assessments including examinations, diagnoses and treatment and assists in the prevention of a variety of diseases, illnesses, disorders and other health issues that are unique to children.
  3. Attends to cases referred by medical and health personnel for specialist advice.
  4. Responds to requests from the social and education sectors regarding children in need of specialist paediatric review.
  5. Collaborates closely with the Senior Medical Officer, Midwives, Medical Officers, immunization management team and community health care team.
  6. Assists in the delivery of child health and other health promotional activities in the community setting and in institutions which provide care and support for children (e.g. Transit Home, Upton Gardens Girls’ Centre and the Boys’ Training Centre).
  7. Consults with and provides expert advice to other physicians and health care professionals involved in patient care.
  8. Monitors patients’ condition and progress and re-evaluates treatments as necessary.
  9. Explains procedures and discusses test results or prescribed treatments with patients and their representatives.
  10. Conducts clinics at various community health facilities weekly as per schedule for new and returning patients.
  11. Adheres to the protocols, guidelines and practice standards pertaining to paediatrics.
  12. Prepares and regularly updates clinical protocols within the community setting.
  13. Receives and responds to referrals from colleagues in a timely manner.
  14. Liaises with other health professionals involved with patient care.
  15. Refers patients to other specialists as required, in accordance with established clinical practice guidelines.
  16. Responds promptly to queries from colleagues and junior staff.
  17. Ensures patients receive optimum care and are satisfied with the service they receive.
  18. Prepares Police and/or Coroner’s reports as required.
  19. Required to give expert evidence in court.
  20. Facilitates the regular delivery of training to the community health care team in relation to paediatrics and adolescent health.
  21. Participates actively in policy formation at the Ministry of Health and Wellness level.
  22. Supports and participates in the research agenda as defined by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.
  23. Utilises the Health Management Information System for the effective performance of duties.
  24. Carries out any other related duties within the appropriate scope of knowledge, skills and abilities of the position.

 

CONDITIONS

  1. Valid Registration and license with the St. Lucia Medical and Dental Council as a Specialist practitioner.
  2. Must maintain confidentiality in all matters of the job.
  3. Required to function in a scheduled travelling post and will receive basic travelling, mileage and other allowances in accordance with approved rates.
  4. Required to maintain a motor vehicle for the proper performance of duties and responsibilities as defined in this Job Description.
  5. Maintain regulatory requirements.
  6. Institutional support is provided through appropriate Civil Service Regulations, Policy and Procedures Manual, Staff Orders of the Civil Service and Departmental Guidelines.
  7. The officer must avail himself/herself for personal development and career advancement through established orientation and in-service training.
  8. Salary in accordance with the terms and conditions stipulated by the Government in the Estimates/Collective Agreement.
  9. This post is non-pensionable.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  2. Strong knowledge of medical terminology.
  3. Advanced knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat paediatric injuries, diseases and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment, alternatives, drug properties and interactions and preventative health-care measures.
  4. A comprehensive knowledge of and ability to interpret Civil Service Rules and Regulations, Operating Procedures, Staff Orders and Collective Agreements.
  5. Efficient and effective use of allocated clinic time.
  6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  7. Effective decision making skills.
  8. Possession of team building abilities.
  9. Good communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

The candidate should possess the following:

  1. Postgraduate (Doctorate level) qualification in Paediatrics from a recognised institution.

Plus

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ post qualification experience within a clinical setting
  • Wide range of experience in general medicine

 

SALARY

Salary is at the rate of:   $73,541.06 (Grade 17, Step 1)
