THIS YEAR, SEVERAL SCHOOLS UNDERWENT MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURAL IMPROVEMENTS.

Prime Minister the Hon. Allen Chastanet has reaffirmed his government’s commitment for greater investment in the education sector.

This year, several schools—Gros-Islet pre-school and Primary School, Vide Boutielle Secondary, Millet Infant and Primary, Mon-Repos-Patience Combined and the Beanfield Secondary—underwent major infrastructural improvements. Renovations included bathroom repairs, painting, the replacement of windows and upgrades to various school blocks. The Soufriere Secondary School will also be receiving a significant portion of the allocated budget for repairs.

The rehabilitation work was conducted by community-based contractors recommended by local government.

There are approximately 73 primary and 26 secondary schools in Saint Lucia. Before independence, schools in Saint Lucia were managed by different religious denominations—in particular, the Roman Catholic, Seventh-Day Adventist, and Methodist churches. Today all public schools are funded and maintained by central government.
