An orange alert level indicates a highly elevated level of seismic activity. Eruption may begin with less than twenty-four hours notice.
The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) in the Office of the Prime Minister has been informed that the alert level of a submarine volcano off the coast of Grenada has been raised to orange.
According to the seismic chart, the volcano, "Kick 'em Jenny," is showing a highly elevated level of seismic, fumarolic, or other unusual activity. Eruption may begin with less than twenty-four hours notice.
While there is no imminent alert or threat to Saint Lucia, NEMO officials are keeping in close contact with authorities in Grenada and at the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI SRC), and will provide updates immediately should they become available.
An orange alert level advises vulnerable communities of evacuation routes, and puts local radio stations in Grenada, Saint. Vincent, Barbados and Trinidad on the alert. It also places the summit of the volcano under continuous scientific surveillance.
NEMO advises that there is no need to panic. Updates will be provided as additional information is received.
