ENSURE THAT YOU FILL AND SECURE YOUR PRESCRIPTIONS BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS.
Statement by Community Pharmacist for Regions 4 and 5, Tina Mathurin-Alexander
The year 2020 has been a very challenging year and as we approach its end and welcome the festive season, I urge you to please do not give your medicines a vacation. Ensure that you fill and secure your prescriptions before the holidays. Keep all of your medication in the original package that it was dispensed, clearly displaying the name and instruction for use.
Additionally store all your medications at the appropriate recommended temperatures discussed while filling your prescriptions. They should also be kept out of reach from children.
It is very important that you take your medication as stated on the labels and adhere to additional information discussed during the dispensing period. For example you may have to avoid certain foods or substances that have the potential to interact with your medication.
Additionally if you wish to use alternative medicines such as herbal, discuss it with your doctor and pharmacist. Please note that you should not skip or double up on doses while on your treatment. In the event that you forgot a dose, take the next dose at the closest possible time. Ask your pharmacist about any questions or concerns regarding your treatment and ensure that you understand fully how you are to use your medication before leaving the pharmacy. Be mindful that side effects are associated with medication use and it is very important that you convey your experiences with us in other to better manage your health.
As we approach the holidays let us not become complacent and continue to fight Covid -19 virus using the protocols recommended by the Ministry of Health and Wellness. These include washing your hands frequently with soap and water thoroughly for at least 20 seconds or use a hand sanitizer with no less than 60% alcohol where hand washing is not possible. Avoid physical and close contact with other persons especially those displaying cold-like symptoms. Face masks or appropriate face coverings should also be wore once in public. Please avoid touching your nose, eyes and mouth as these are some of the main ways you may contract the virus if your hands are contaminated. Hence it is paramount to ensure that you continuously disinfect and clean frequently touched surfaces and items. The protocols help to protect both you and us health care providers as we strive to continue managing and treating your health in a distinguished manner.
We thank you for your support and wish you a safe, happy, festive, and healthy season.
