DISCUSSIONS TO FOCUS ON DEVELOPING A LICENSING FRAMEWORK FOR THE TOURISM SECTOR.

The Ministry of Tourism, Information, Broadcasting, Culture and Creative Industries will today, host a consultancy meeting on developing a licensing framework for the Tourism Industry.

Dr T. Jennifer Edwards, the lead consultant has been contracted by the Ministry to develop a Licensing Regime and Classification System for the tourism sector. This consultancy is based on the recognition that the regulation of tourism products and services through licensing, and compliance with minimum standards that meet international best practice is necessary, if Saint Lucia is to acquire a unique, competitive and high-value product in line with sustainable development principles.

The deliverables of the consultancy is intended to assist with the regulation, quality management and monitoring of the products and services offered in the informal and formal sub-sectors of tourism in Saint Lucia. The goal is for the framework to be fully comprehensive covering both a Classification System for the Accommodation Sector and a Licensing Scheme for all tourism sub-sectors. These sub-sectors include accommodation, transportation, marine recreation activities; sites and attractions and tour guides/tour companies. The Licensing Framework will guide the development of an appropriate Tourism Licensing Legislation.

The March 5 meeting will take place at the Ministry of Infrastructure in Union, from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
