Member of Parliament for the Castries Central Constituency, Hon. Sarah Flood-Beaubrun welcomes recent amendments to Public Health Legislation.

The Public Health Act Cap. 11.01 attempts to reduce activities affecting public health. One such activity is noise pollution which can affect both health and behaviour.  According to research, noise pollution can cause hypertension, high stress levels, hearing loss and sleep disturbances. Flood-Beaubrun displayed satisfaction with the country’s Public Health legislation. The legislation recognises the adverse effect unacceptably high noise levels have on an individual’s health.

I’ve got a serious problem in my constituency and I’ve received letters, petitions and emails,” Flood-Beaubrun admits. “ I’ve had to have meetings with the Castries City Council, the Housing Authority and the Police because I have many complaints from my constituents about the level of noise within the city. We all appreciate that if one lives in the city one should expect to have more noise than usual but the level of noise within the city and in some neighborhoods in Saint Lucia is unacceptable and it’s causing a health problem for many of our citizens,” The Castries Central Member of Parliament also welcomes the extension of the powers bestowed to public health officers.

They can take equipment unto various premises whether it be to measure noise levels, take samples, so that we can enforce the legislation,” adds Flood-Beaubrun.  The Public Health (amendment) Act was passed in the House of Assembly on Tuesday, June 11, 2019.
