A REGULAR SCHEDULE IS ESSENTIAL FOR MAINTAINING MENTAL, PHYSICAL, AND SOCIAL WELLBEING.

As Saint Lucia adapts to a new sense of normalcy, the Ministry of Education is encouraging the public to maintain physical and mental health.

Practicing self-care, health officials say, can help alleviate the psychological distress and anxiety caused by the pandemic and prevent lasting adverse psychological effects.

Family Life Educator in the Bureau of Health Education, Naomie Grandison, stressed the importance of developing a regular schedule.

“This is most important right now because it's a new normal, and you must occupy your time to stay sane, for mental, physical, and social wellbeing,” Ms. Grandison said.

Another important tip in practicing self-care is healthy eating. Ms. Grandison explained that the food an individual consumes can affect the body’s ability to prevent, fight and recover from infections or illnesses.

“If you cannot immediately recognize the origin of that food type, try to reduce your consumption of that significantly. Foods, including snacks, need to be as whole as possible or next to its whole form like nuts and seeds, healthy fats, and fibre, that can sustain and reduce your hunger. And opt for water rather than juice which has unhealth added sugars.”

Ms. Grandison noted that a person's environment and their relationship with others also play a significant role in maintaining their mental health.

“We must form positive connections with others, our environment, our family, and our work or else we will not be happy or satisfied.”

The public is encouraged to seek help at the National Mental Wellness Center, or from trusted family members and friends, or call the Helpline at 201 if needed.
