SAINT LUCIA ASSESSES HOW TO BEST ASSIST IN HURRICANE RECOVERY EFFORTS.

As the Bahamas continues to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Dorian, countries in the region have pledged support for the recovery efforts.

Ms. Dorine Gustave, Acting Director of Saint Lucia’s National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), said Saint Lucia is in the process of determining how best to help the battered islands.

“Water has been identified as a primary concern,” she said. “Their water source is mainly well water, and you can imagine with the storm surges and high levels of water that the wells can no longer provide clean and safe water. We do however need to determine how best we can get water to the Bahamian people. The Bahamas, of course, is not as close as Dominica was during Hurricane Maria where we could easily get one of our partners to help ship the items.”

On Sep. 5, Prime Minister Hon. Allen Chastanet led a delegation to the Bahamas, in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.

“I am currently in the Bahamas as part of a delegation from CARICOM, CDEMA, the CDB and the RSS,” he stated. “We have been greeted by Bahamian Prime Minister, Hon. Hubert Minnis, before heading into a situation briefing with several agencies who will help provide a better idea of the extent of the destruction.”

For those keen to assist with recovery efforts, accounts in the name of the Government of Saint Lucia have been set up at selected banks.

The Government of Saint Lucia wishes to thank those who have expressed interest in the humanitarian thrust.
