The interruption is necessary to repair newly formed leaks in the main line.

The island’s water supply from the John Compton Dam will be suspended on Sunday, June 28, for maintenance work on the 24-inch raw water line.

Senior Operations Manager at the Water and Sewerage Company (WASCO) Inc., Aly Anthony, said the interruption is necessary to repair newly formed leaks in the line.

“This is probably one of our biggest concerns right now,” he said. “We have a weak 24-inch pipeline that is severely compromised, corroded, and has a lot of pinholes. Just last week we shutdown to repair thirteen leaks which were repaired within the stipulated time.”

However, the increase in water pressure following last week’s repairs at the John Compton Dam caused new ruptures in the line.

“Where there were pinholes—just small holes—these have enlarged, and as a result we have two major leaks that we [now] have to repair, which we intend to do on Sunday.”

Anthony said those repairs should take about five hours. However, the water supply may take up to 24 hours to be restored because the water lines have to be charged.

Additionally, WASCO said those at higher elevations will experience a delay in the restoration of water services.

A previous suspension of the water supply facilitated the installation of a dual-level floating pump. Anthony said the installation was successful.
