Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for employment in the post of Biomedical Equipment Technician at the Millennium Heights Medical Complex.
A. RESPONSIBILITIES AND RELATIONSHIPS:
- Responsible for the maintenance of medical equipment through the implementation and effective use of expert knowledge and established procedures.
- Works under the supervision of and reports to the Biomedical Engineer.
- Required to respond to the Plant and Facilities Manager and Chief Executive Officer on work-related matters from time to time.
B. DUTIES AND TASKS:-
- Inspects newly acquired medical devices and systems for safety and function in accordance with established procedures.
- Assigns and affixes appropriate control numbers and labels to medical devices for ease of identification.
- Performs complete performance assurance, planned maintenance and electrical safety inspections to identify system safety and quality problems, and recommends solutions to facilitate enhanced operations.
- Responds to medical equipment problems in clinical areas through a process of evaluation, troubleshooting and using diagnostic skills with moderate to high level of acuity and complexity.
- Conducts routine departmental rounds of assigned areas to assess operation of medical devices and systems, address user concerns, provide feedback to users on the status of repairs and other maintenance activities, and to ensure effective use of equipment.
- Maintains timely, accurate records on equipment inspections, repairs etc. in order to facilitate adequate reporting on a monthly basis.
- Communicates routinely with supervisory personnel of Millennium Heights Medical Complex on the status of equipment repairs and maintenance activities.
- Reports all equipment operator safety issues in a timely manner, in accordance with established procedures.
- Participates in medical equipment evaluations, installations and upgrades, including software revision, to ensure optimal performance of facility’s medical equipment.
- Collaborates with senior management and team leaders to develop and implement solutions to address recurring problems.
- Follows the established work order tracking system and prioritises work schedules.
- Adheres to established safety protocols, programs and procedures for handling medical equipment.
- Orders parts and supplies necessary for the servicing of medical equipment in accordance with established procedures, and through liaising with various suppliers to ensure optimal performance of equipment.
- Instructs technical team and other relevant members of staff on testing, calibration, preventive maintenance, basic trouble-shooting and repair of medical equipment.
- Required to serve on related committees as the need arises,
- Assists in planning the operational budget for the Biomedical Unit in conjunction with the Biomedical Engineer and other members of staff.
- Performs any other work-related duties as may be assigned by the Biomedical Engineer from time to time.
C. CONDITIONS:
- Accommodation is provided within a general administrative office.
- Required to function in a scheduled travelling post and will receive basic travelling, mileage and other allowances in accordance with approved rates.
- Required to maintain a motor vehicle for the proper performance of duties and responsibilities as defined in this job description.
- Institutional support provided through appropriate legislation, regulations, Statutory Instruments and departmental protocols and guidelines.
- Officer must avail himself/herself for personal development and career advancement through orientation, general and specialised in-service training to ensure requisite knowledge is current and in accordance with best practice.
- Required to perform On-Call functions to provide in-house repairs and other assistance as required.
- Salary and benefits are in accordance with that stipulated in the terms and conditions of employment.
- Required to maintain confidentiality and a high level of integrity.
- Performance will be evaluated twice yearly.
- Salary is in accordance with the terms and conditions stipulated by the Government of Saint Lucia.
- Vacation leave will be provided in accordance with established Regulations.
- This post is non-pensionable and the holder will be required to contribute to the National Insurance Cooperation.
D. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to perform testing and troubleshooting of medical devices involving specialised and generic test equipment and software diagnostic tools.
- Advanced customer service skills and ability to interact effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, staff and broader health care community.
- Excellent time management and prioritisation skills.
- Working knowledge of electrical and biomedical safety principles and ability to perform electrical safety testing on biomedical equipment.
- Working knowledge of tools, hardware, software and equipment required in the conduct of duties, including applications and programming.
- Ability to work independently within the scope of established policies, procedures and goals.
- Ability to effectively perform under emergency and stressful conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, and be able to push, pull, carry or maneuver heavier items (with additional manpower or appropriate devices where necessary).
- Ability to effectively teach/coach technical and clinical personnel.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members.
- Advanced oral and written communication skills.
- Advanced computer literacy skills.

F. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Equipment Technology or a related field, from a recognised college or university, with no previous experience.
OR
Graduate Diploma in Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Equipment Technology or a related field, from a recognised college or university, plus three (3) years’ related post qualification experience, in a post at Grade 7 (or equivalent) or above.
OR
Associate Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Equipment Technology or a related field, from a recognised college or university, plus six (6) years’ related post qualification experience, in a post at Grade 7 (or equivalent) or above.
OR
Diploma in Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Equipment Technology or a related field, from a recognised college or university, plus nine (9) years’ related post qualification experience.
G. SALARY
Salary is at the rate of EC $ 45,844.98 per annum (Grade 10, Step 1)
