Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for employment in the post of Medical Technologist II, I - Cytology at the Millennium Heights Medical Complex.

 

A.  RESPONSIBILITIES AND RELATIONSHIPS:

  1. Responsible for the collection, analysis and cataloguing of cell samples, and maintenance of consultation with Physicians.
  2. Reports to and works under the direction of the Laboratory Superintendent.
  3. Required to respond to the Pathologist from time to time on work-related matters.

 

B.  DUTIES AND TASKS:-

  1. Prepares specimens and screens non-gynecological and gynecological slides to evaluate specimen quality and detect abnormal conditions.
  2. Prepares and issues reports of “normal” gynecological smears for submission to the Consultant Pathologist.
  3. Documents specimens by verifying patients’ and specimens’ information.
  4. Maintains effective laboratory operations by adhering to standards of specimen collection, preparation, or laboratory safety.
  5. Performs routine maintenance of equipment and assists in the maintenance of a safe working environment by observing established processes and procedures.
  6. Provides patient clinical data or microscopic findings to assist Consultant Pathologist in the preparation of pathology reports.
  7. Maintains effective laboratory operations by adhering to standards of specimen collection, preparation and laboratory safety.
  8. Participates in quality assurance, safety and continuing education programes to ensure enhanced efficiencies in the provision of Laboratory Services.
  9. Maintains an effective and confidential filing system for specimen reports.
  10. Assists in the training of Medical Laboratory Assistants to ensure availability of professional and experience personnel in the Laboratory.
  11. Performs any other work-related duties as may be assigned by the Pathologist, Laboratory Superintendent and Director, Laboratory Services from time to time.

 

C.  CONDITIONS:

  1. Valid Registration with the Allied Health Council.
  2. Must maintain confidentiality in all matters of the job.
  3. Demonstrate a commitment to continuing education in order to maintain competency and keep up to date with current practice.
  4. Accommodation is provided within a general administrative office.
  5. Institutional support provided through appropriate legislation, regulations, Statutory Instruments and departmental protocols and guidelines.
  6. Officer must avail himself/herself for personal development and career advancement through orientation, general and specialised in-service training.
  7. Required to function in a scheduled travelling post and will receive basic travelling, mileage and other allowances in accordance with approved rates.
  8. Required to maintain a motor vehicle for the proper performance of duties and responsibilities as defined in this job description.
  9. Required to work on call/call out.
  10. Salary and benefits are in accordance with that stipulated in the terms and conditions of employment.
  11. Required to maintain patient confidentiality and a high level of integrity.
  12. Performance will be evaluated twice yearly.
  13. Vacation leave will be provided in accordance with established Regulations.
  14. This post is non-pensionable and the holder will be required to contribute to the National Insurance Cooperation.

 

D.  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  1. Ability to understand medical/surgical terminology.
  2. Ability to work without restrictions (sight, hand/finger dexterity, colour discernment etc.) as evidenced by a valid Medical Certificate.
  3. Working knowledge and demonstrated understanding of all aspects of the area of Cytology.
  4. Working knowledge of current Laboratory methods, techniques and equipment.
  5. Ability to issue accurate and timely specimen reports.
  6. Ability to perform highly detailed microscopic work for long periods of time.
  7. Demonstrated ability to keep updated with current scientific data with respect to medical laboratory technology and Cytology.
  8. Working knowledge of established Regulations, Departmental Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures.
  9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members.
  10. Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  11. Advanced computer literacy, observational and analytical skills.
  12. Ability to work under pressure, whist ensuring precision and accuracy. 

 

E.  EVALUATION METHOD:

F.  QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor of Science Degree in Cytology or an appropriately related field, from a recognised college or university, with no previous experience.

OR

Associate Degree in Cytology or an appropriately related field, from a recognised college or university, with at least four (4) years’ relevant post qualification experience, in a post at Grade 7 (or equivalent) or above.

OR

Associate Degree in Cytology or an appropriately related field, from a recognised college or university, with no previous experience.

OR

Diploma in Cytology or an appropriately related field, from a recognised college or university, with at least three (3) years’ post qualification experience, working within a laboratory setting.

 

G.  SALARY

Salary is within the range of EC $ 34,218.27 - 42,063.88 per annum (Grade 9 and 7, Step 1) and will be based on qualifications and experience.
