Job Description

Job Title                   :                 Nursing Director

Relations and Responsibilities:

The Nursing Director reports to the Chief Executive Officer and is responsible for providing appropriate clinical leadership and management and overall supervision of all administrative, clinical practice and quality of care aspects of the nursing services being delivered by the hospital.  She is responsible for developing and promoting a high standard of practice and delivering high quality patient care through the development and enforcement of protocols, establishment of practice guidelines, implementation of effective policies and procedures and to ensure continued professional development through facilitation of mentoring and education.  

The Nursing Director is also expected to contribute to the development and delivery of the wider organizational agenda, while advising the Board on nursing issues. He/She will take the lead in shaping policies and strategies for developing and modernizing nursing practice throughout the hospital, in order to ensure the delivery of high quality, safe and appropriate health care services for all patients consistent with current standards of practice.

Expected to respond to the Board of Directors on matters relating to activities in progress or work to be assigned and accomplished in order to maintain smooth operations of the hospital. Regardless of supervision, each employee is responsible for his/her own actions, which includes questioning and reporting to Management if work conditions are unfamiliar and/or appear inappropriate or unsafe.

 

Working Hours: Monday to Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm; you are entitled to one (1) hour lunch break every day, with coverage on weekend, and holidays and in events of emergency as required

 

Duties and Functions:

  1. Serve as a member of the executive leadership team of the hospital.
  1. Be knowledgeable of administrative regulations and how they apply to staff.
  1. Be professional and maintain an effective working relationship with the Board, Chief Executive Officer, Management and Staff. Display superior patient service habits, exceptional customer service relations, and exemplary personal and professional ethics.
  1. Required to keep all hospital business, patient, employee and quality management information private and confidential.
  1. Required to prevent the improper use or premature disclosure of confidential St. Jude Hospital materials and information.
  1. Participate in the recruitment and retention of staff in accordance with the approved staffing plan. Receives administrative approval from the Chief Executive Officer before final selection by HR.
  1. Develop and implement principles of practice, clinical care protocols and appropriate policies and procedures consistent with standards of best practice, Accreditation and Regulatory Bodies. Ensure that the Nursing Policies and Procedures Manual is reviewed/revised and finalized for approval on an annual basis
  1. Ensure all work is completed in accordance with appropriate service standards, policies and procedure, and identifies opportunities for continuous improvement to new and existing policies and procedures in order to improve efficiency. 
  1. Develop and monitor work schedules and assignments for the nursing staff division, according to work load, space and equipment availability.Ensure continuous performance review and development within the Nursing Division. Established agreed set goals and objectives with Nurse Managers which are in line with their overall professional development and the strategic business objectives of the hospital.
  1. Ensure all performance appraisals are completed in a timely fashion and submitted to the Human Resource Department within the required period.
  1. Maintain awareness of advances in medicine and treatment equipment, data processing technology, governing regulations, health insurance changes and financing options.
  1. Monitor the use of diagnostic services, bed management, facilities, and staff to ensure effective use of resources and assess the need for additional staff, equipment and services.
  1. Prepare activity reports to inform management of the status and implementation plans of programmes, services and quality initiative.
  1. Responsible for ensuring Nursing Code of Ethics at St. Jude Hospital is uphold
  1. Provide effective management of the volunteer program in collaboration with the Volunteer Coordinator and the Human Resource Manager.
  1. Develop and maintain systems of clinical practice in partnership with the Medical Director to ensure that the delivery of the highest possible standards of patient care is the hallmark of the hospital’s healthcare delivery system and that patient safety is at its core.
  1. Responsible for working cooperatively with the Medical Director in the development and implementation of the annual Clinical Action Plan based on the St. Jude Hospital Strategic Plan.
  1. Responsible for working with the Director of Finance & Budgeting in the overall planning, development and monitoring of the annual budget for the Nursing Division.
  1. Develop the management infrastructure required to support the Nursing Director; inclusive of the development of clinical leadership at all levels within the Nursing Service division and designating roles for the Nursing Staff in continuing education, training and research.
  1. Responsible to lead and perform special projects as determine by the Chief Executive Officer or the St. Jude Hospital Board.
  1. Representations at negotiations meetings, local and international forums or as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer.
  1. Assist the St. Jude Hospital Board in fulfilling its statutory role in dealing with Nursing Staff issues, by providing expert advice as required.
  1. To assume all other responsibilities and perform all other duties as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer and the St. Jude Hospital Board.

Work fulltime, forty hour (40) work week, within a professional health care environment which requires the use of patience and sound judgment, excellent customer relations, strong analytical skills, scientific thinking and problem solving, being systematic and efficient in performing tasks, team leadership and teamwork and ability to make appropriate decisions. Needs to show exemplary conduct and have knowledge of divisional operations, policies and procedures.

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Master’s Degree in Nursing Management/Health Service Management.
  1. A minimum of five (5) year’s professional experience in managing staff at a senior level in a public and private hospital.
  1. Administrative skills and experience in senior managerial position

Requirements:

  • Registered or be eligible to apply for licensure with the St. Lucia Nursing Council to practice in St. Lucia.
  • Possesses valid driver’s license, endorse in accordance with the St. Lucia Licensing Board.
