Proceeds from the event will assist patients with dialysis related expenses and treatment.
The Saint Lucia Renal Association will host the second annual Celebrity Sports Day this Sunday, to raise funds for those who cannot afford treatment for Renal Disease.
The event culminates a week of activities held in observance of World Kidney Day.
Consultant Nephrologist Dr. Merle Clarke, said Celebrity Sports Day was motivated by a desire to marry entertainment with health education.
"We thought that if we could get people whose names are recognizable ̶ the celebrities ̶ to come out and choose an embarrassment of their choice (which is what we are calling it), whether cricket, volleyball, basketball, or netball, it would encourage others come out on the day to give back. It will be a fun family day, everybody will be playing, yet there will be a merger of sports and health as exercise is important to overall health," Dr. Clarke said.
"It is also an opportunity to raise well-needed funds to assist our patients with the purchase of their medications, their dialysis treatments, and a series of other [health related] necessities."
There are currently ninety-eight patients on dialysis in the public sector, and several more on the waiting list.
The theme for Kidney Week 2016 is “Kidney Disease in Children, Act Early to Prevent It.”
