THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH ENCOURAGES ALL ELIGIBLE PERSONS TO VACCINATE AGAINST THE INFLUENZA VIRUS.
The Ministry of Health, Wellness and and Elderly Affairs informs of the availability of the Influenza vaccine. The flu season generally runs from October to March – a time when there is a notable increase in the number of cases of flu-like illness.
The flu is a contagious and potentially serious respiratory disease that can result in unfavorable outcomes including severe illness, hospitalization, and death. For this reason, it is important for persons, especially the vulnerable, to be vaccinated against the virus causing the flu. In light of this, the Ministry of Health, Wellness & and Elderly Affairs encourages all eligible persons, particularly those at higher risk, to vaccinate against the influenza virus.
Flu vaccinations have many benefits including reducing the risk of flu illnesses, severe infection, hospitalization, and even death. The vaccine is an important preventative tool, especially for people living with chronic health conditions and other vulnerable populations such as pregnant women. The influenza vaccine is safe.
The flu virus constantly changes. As a result, the vaccine is updated from one season to the next to protect against newer influenza virus strains. It is for this reason that it is recommended yearly.
The flu vaccine is available at all Wellness centers and it is free. Persons are encouraged to call or visit your nearest Wellness Center to access the available flu vaccine. For more information, contact the Community Health Care Services Unit at 468- 5321.
