THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION UNDERLINES ITS COMMITMENT TO RAISING AWARENESS OF STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS.

Children with special needs are being celebrated for their incredible achievements.

The push for inclusive education for children with special needs has broken barriers and provided opportunities for all students to thrive academically and socially. At a graduation ceremony for the Professional Development Certificate Course in Special Education, held by the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Department of Education, Innovation and Vocational Training, Mr. Kendall Khodra, highlighted some of the benefits of inclusive education.

“Inclusive education transcends the mere provision of equal access to educational opportunities. Summarily, it extends to the provision of equitable physical access, and very importantly, institutional programming, which ensures that all students particularly those who have been traditionally excluded or marginalized are afforded a fair opportunity to flourish and maximize their potential,” he said.

Mr. Khodra provided insight into the Ministry of Education's dedicated efforts aimed at promoting awareness and fostering acceptance of students with special education needs. He shed light on the comprehensive measures being undertaken to create an inclusive and equitable educational environment.

“The development of inclusive systems and inclusive education sectors are quite complex and necessitates multispectral strategies across all levels of society. Material to this are public sensitization, advocacy, and capacity development. The Ministry of Education is cognizant of this, and has invested in those areas through initiatives such as the Education Quality Improvement Project (EQuIP). Through these initiatives, significant strides have been made in fostering greater awareness and acceptance of persons with special education needs. Substantial Investments have also been made in capacity development both infrastructurally and institutionally.”

The graduation ceremony for children with special needs is a reminder that every individual has the potential to succeed. It underscores the importance of creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all.
