THE CARNIVAL PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE (CPMC), IS APPEALING TO THE PUBLIC TO REFRAIN FROM FLYING DRONES WITHIN NO-DRONE ZONES

As we approach the height of Saint Lucia Carnival 2024, culminating in the Parade of the Bands on July 15 and 16, the Ministry responsible for Civil Aviation, in collaboration with the Carnival Planning and Management Committee (CPMC), is appealing to the public to refrain from flying drones within no-drone zones, particularly near the George F. L. Charles Airport (GFLCA) in Castries.

During last year’s carnival, flight operations at GFLCA were disrupted due to unauthorized drone activity over the runway. To prevent such incidents, we urge all drone users to adhere to the following regulations:

  1. Recreational Drone Use: Recreational drone use is strictly prohibited near airports or within the designated no-drone zones around Hewanorra International and George F. L. Charles Airports. These zones extend within a 2.5-mile radius of the airports and must be respected to ensure aviation safety.
  2. Commercial Drone Activity: Applications for commercial drone activity within these zones are considered on a case-by-case basis. During Carnival 2024, including the Parade of the Bands, only one drone operator endorsed by the CPMC is permitted to capture footage of the events in Castries.
  3. Event-Specific Regulations: Revelers and spectators are encouraged to enjoy carnival responsibly. The safety of our aviation sector, crucial for both locals and visitors, must not be compromised.

Public safety is our top priority. Unauthorized drone use endangers flight operations, poses risks to public safety, and can negatively impact our tourism industry. We urge everyone to follow these regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable carnival season.

By following these guidelines, we can ensure that Saint Lucia's aviation sector operates safely and efficiently during the carnival season, contributing to a successful and memorable event for locals and visitors alike.
