Originally called Fishermen's Feast, activities to commemorate Fisher Folk Day will be held in fishing communities around the island.

Fisher folk across the island will come together this weekend to celebrate their achievements in the fishing industry.

What was once commonly referred to as Fisherman’s Feast is now called Fisher Folk Day.

According to Yvonne Edwin, Information and Communications Officer in the Department of Fisheries, this event celebrates the contributions of all fishers.

“You have women who not only vend and clean fish, they are also involved in the fisheries sector and go out on vessels. Of course, the numbers are not many compared to the number of men we have registered in the fisheries sector. I think it is for this reason that it is no longer called Fishermen’s Feast but rather Fisher Folk Day."

Ms. Edwin said the fishers will host activities in their respective communities.

"Each community and their main landing sites have their cooperatives and they will be hosting individual events. They tend to start with church services and throughout the day they host various activities within the community, centered around the fishing community of course, bringing those fishermen, women and other persons involved in the industry to celebrate their day."

The Fisheries Department is collaborating with the Department of Cooperatives and fishing communities in spearheading the activities.

Fisherman’s Feast started in 1910 in Boston, USA. Fisher Folk Day will be oficially observed on June 29.
