GOVERNMENT TO SIGN AGREEMENT WITH OPEC FUND, FOR PARTIAL FINANCING OF THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE JULIAN HUNTE HIGHWAY.
The Government of Saint Lucia will sign an agreement next week with the OPEC Fund for International Development.
The monies will partially finance the cost of planned construction work along the Julian Hunte Highway (JHH), along with a loan from the Government of Kuwait.
“At the World Bank meetings in New York next week, we will be signing with OPEC so the funding arrangements needed for the Gros Islet Highway have been completed,” Prime Minister Hon. Philip Pierre said. “The money for the reconstruction is coming from OPEC and the Kuwaiti Fund. We got $33 million in funding.”
Currently underway is the widening of the Vieux Sucrieux Road, an improvement that will help alleviate vehicular traffic during construction along the JHH.
“We are working on the Vieux Sucrieux road in the meantime, in order to alleviate traffic when work starts on the highway.” The Prime Minister continued: “and next year, all things being equal, we will get work done on the Vieux Sucrieux bridge.”
The planned construction work will be carried out along a portion of the highway that starts at the Monchy gap and ends at the entrance to Cap Estate.
