THE TASK FORCE OF TARIFFS HELD ITS INAUGURAL MEETING, TODAY.
In response to recently announced tariff increases by the United States, the Government of Saint Lucia has established a task force to monitor and evaluate the impact of these trade policy changes. The task force, chaired by Hon. Emma Hippolyte, Minister for Commerce, Manufacturing, Business Development, Cooperatives, and Consumer Affairs, held its inaugural meeting on March 18.
The tariffs, announced by United States President Donald Trump on February 1 include a 25 percent additional tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, and a 10 percent additional tariff on imports from China. Energy sources from Canada will face a lower 10 percent tariff. These policy changes have raised concerns about their potential impact on Saint Lucia’s economy, trade relationships, and the business community.
The task force, established by way of a Cabinet conclusion, will assess the economic and trade implications of these tariffs and develop strategies to mitigate potential negative effects.
Its key objectives include:
• monitoring the impact on exports from Saint Lucia to the United States;
• analyzing the effects of tariff increases on imported goods and supply chains;
• advising exporters, businesses, and stakeholders on how to navigate these changes; and
• recommending strategies to manage the new U.S. market conditions.
The task force will be supported by a technical sub-committee, comprising representatives from government ministries, private sector organizations, and trade-related agencies. Meetings will be held bi-weekly, with reports submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers to inform national policy decisions.
Honourable Emma Hippolyte emphasized the importance of a proactive and collaborative approach to their efforts, stating: “The government is committed to ensuring that Saint Lucia remains resilient in the face of global economic challenges. This task force will provide data-driven insights and strategic recommendations to support our businesses and economy.”
The Government of Saint Lucia will continue to engage stakeholders and provide updates as the task force conducts its assessment.
