THE MINISTER FOR COMMERCE EMPHASIZED THE IMPORTANCE OF NETWORKING TO BUILD RESILIENCE.
Happy World MSME Day 2025! Today, the Ministry of Commerce, Manufacturing, Business Development, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs joins the international community in celebrating the tremendous impact of Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) on the global and local economy. This year’s theme, “Enhancing the Role of Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) as Drivers of Sustainable Growth and Innovation,” is both timely and relevant, especially as global trade dynamics continue to evolve. According to the United Nations, MSMEs remain vital sources of employment, income generation, and inclusive economic growth—particularly for women, youth, and vulnerable populations. Yet, many of these enterprises still operate informally and face significant challenges, especially in accessing finance.
In her national address marking the occasion, Honourable Emma Hippolyte, Minister for Commerce, emphasized the importance of cultivating meaningful connections among MSMEs to unlock opportunities to collaborate, innovate and build resilience. “Let’s move away from the isolationist mindset and lean into the strength of community. Join that association. Attend that event. Start that conversation,” she said. “Associations are only as strong and impactful as the people who shape them. Together, we are stronger.”
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce, Mrs. Sophia Alfay-Henry, reaffirmed the Government’s ongoing commitment to supporting the private sector by creating an enabling environment. She highlighted key initiatives such as the MSME Loan-Grant Facility and today’s highly interactive Business Registration Drive and Open Day hosted at the Ministry’s southern division at the Uptown Business Centre on New Dock Road, Vieux Fort.
To amplify the visibility and impact of World MSME Day 2025, the Ministry will be featuring a video series showcasing the success stories of southern-based MSMEs that have benefited from the MSME Loan-Grant Facility. These activities underscore the Ministry’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and resilient MSME sector that contributes meaningfully to national development. In Saint Lucia, MSMEs play a crucial role in job creation, poverty reduction, and community empowerment, making them vital agents in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As part of the day’s celebration, the public is encouraged to support local businesses by tagging their favorite MSMEs and sharing photos of themselves enjoying their products or services, using the hashtags #LoveSaintLucia and #HomeHave. The Ministry of Commerce remains steadfast in its mission to equip local businesses with the tools, resources and networks needed to compete and succeed—locally, regionally, and globally.
