THE HEALTH EDUCATION INITIATIVE WAS HELD AT THE SALTIBUS WELLNESS CENTRE.
In a spirited effort to promote healthier lifestyles and prevent chronic disease, the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs, in partnership with the Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Metabolic Diseases in Saint Lucia, successfully hosted the “Healthy Eating for Better Living” initiative on Friday, April 25, 2025, at the Saltibus Wellness Centre.
The one-day event, grounded in health education and prevention, brought together a cross-section of specially invited guests, healthcare professionals, and Ministry officials dedicated to addressing the growing burden of noncommunicable diseases. A key highlight of the day was an engaging, hands-on cooking demonstration designed to empower participants with the knowledge and skills of preparing nutritious, affordable meals using locally available ingredients.
Nutritionist for Region 5, Ms. Fadia Campbell, highlighted the significance of the initiative and its role in improving the nation’s health by encouraging informed dietary decisions. “So, the activity here today is in keeping with our continued effort to promote healthy eating and raise awareness of how food impacts our health. We’re here educating individuals on balanced meals, portion control, and how reducing salt, sugar, and processed foods can decrease their chances of developing what we call metabolic diseases,” she noted.
Also addressing attendees was Senior Medical Officer for Noncommunicable Diseases, Dr. Shana Cyr-Philbert, who emphasized that nutrition plays a fundamental role in chronic disease prevention. “There is strong evidence that links poor nutrition to the onset and progression of noncommunicable diseases. Adopting a healthier diet, even in small steps, can significantly reduce the risk of developing conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, which are the leading causes of death and disability in Saint Lucia,” explained Dr. Philbert.
Participants left the event motivated and better equipped to make healthier choices in their homes and communities. This initiative is part of the Ministry’s broader national campaign to reduce the incidence of lifestyle-related conditions and strengthen public awareness through practical, community-based interventions.
The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs remains committed to advancing a culture of wellness through inclusive outreach, strategic partnerships, and sustainable programming that empowers Saint Lucians to live longer, healthier lives.
