THE OBSERVANCE IS BEING HELD UNDER THE THEME: "MEASURE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE ACCURATELY, CONTROL IT, LIVE LONGER."
In observance of World Hypertension Day on May 17, 2025, the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs joined the global community in raising awareness of hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, which continues to be a major contributor to premature deaths both globally and in Saint Lucia.
This year’s global theme, “Measure your blood pressure accurately, control it, live longer,” reinforces the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to promote better health practices. Accurate measurement using clinically validated monitors and proper technique remains a cornerstone of early diagnosis and sustained management.
In delivering the official message for the occasion, Minister for Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs Hon. Moses Jn. Baptiste highlighted the urgent need for accurate blood pressure monitoring and effective control measures to combat this silent killer. “Hypertension is called the silent killer because persons who have high blood pressure usually do not have symptoms of the condition. Unfortunately, over time, uncontrolled high blood pressure causes serious damage to vital organs like the heart and the kidney. Hypertension is a major cause of premature death worldwide,” stated Minister Jn. Baptiste.
According to national health statistics, an estimated 2 out of 5 Saint Lucian adults aged 18 to 69 years, or approximately 40 percent, are affected by hypertension. Even more concerning is that fewer than 1 in 5 persons with hypertension in Saint Lucia have their blood pressure under control.
Minister Jn. Baptiste further emphasized the importance of long-term blood pressure control. “Controlling high blood pressure prevents conditions like heart attacks, strokes, kidney damage and disabilities and deaths from these health conditions. By taking control of our blood pressure, we add years to our life and life to our years,” Minister explained.
As part of its ongoing health reform, the Government of Saint Lucia, through its Performance Based Financing and Universal Health Coverage initiative, has taken steps to improve access to care. From August 1, 2023, antihypertensive medications became available free of charge at all wellness centres. Additionally, plans are in place to provide free laboratory testing for all hypertensive and diabetic patients across the island’s primary care network.
The Ministry continues to encourage citizens to check their blood pressure regularly and adopt healthy lifestyle changes, including physical activity, balanced nutrition, limited alcohol intake and smoking cessation.
