In observance of World No Tobacco Day 2025, the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs, through the Substance Abuse Advisory Council Secretariat, is reaffirming its commitment to tobacco control and public health protection.
The global theme, “Unmasking the Appeal,” focuses on exposing manipulative tactics used by the tobacco and nicotine industries, particularly those targeting youth.
Tobacco use remains a leading cause of preventable death globally. While Saint Lucia has made notable progress, such as enforcing graphic health warnings on cigarette packaging, implementing tobacco taxation, and prohibiting smoking in public spaces emerging nicotine products continue to threaten national efforts.
“This year’s theme is a reminder of how tobacco and nicotine industries continue to evolve in their strategies. We are now seeing the use of sleek packaging, sweet flavors, and digital platforms to market vapes and e-cigarettes, especially to youth. These efforts must be exposed and resisted,” said Programme Officer, Substance Abuse Advisory Council Secretariat, Celeb Paul.
Recent national data from the 2019 Behavioural Risk Factor Survey indicated a rise in tobacco use among Saint Lucian males and females, particularly within the 18 - 44 age group. The Ministry has also observed increased hospitalization and oxygen dependence among young adults linked to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
As part of this year’s observance, the Ministry, with support from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), has commenced the fifth round of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey. The findings will help assess trends in tobacco product use and guide tailored interventions for youth protection.
“Our mission is to create a tobacco-free generation. We are focusing on youth-centered education, stronger regulation, and multi-sectoral partnerships to reduce initiation and support healthier choices,” added Paul.
The Ministry urges parents, educators, and community leaders to actively engage in protecting young people from tobacco and nicotine exposure. On this World No Tobacco Day, Saint Lucia stands united in exposing harmful industry tactics and safeguarding public health.
