New compost shed opens at Deglos Sanitary Landfill

THE SHED WILL FACILITATE THE COMPOSTING OF ORGANIC MATTER, WHICH IS THEN SOLD TO FARMERS AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE.
The Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Rural Development has completed the construction of a Compost Processing Shed at the Deglos Sanitary Landfill. The project, supported by the Taiwanese-funded Seven Crops Project, marks a significant stride toward promoting sustainable waste management practices in Saint Lucia by transforming organic waste material into nutrient-rich compost.
 
The facility will play a vital role in optimizing the composting process by providing a more controlled environment which enhances the quality and consistency of the output. This initiative aligns with the nation's goals of promoting waste reduction, recycling, conserving resources, and transitioning towards a circular economy.
 
The unveiling ceremony was attended by Ambassador Peter Chia-yen Chen of the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Sant Lucia; Honourable Alfred Prospere, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Rural Development; Honourable Shawn Edward, Minister of Education, Sustainable Development, Innovation, Science, Technology and Vocational Training who has direct responsibility for the SLSWMA; Ms. Anita Montoute, Permanent Secretary in the Department of Sustainable Development/ Chairperson of the SLSWMA Board of Directors; Ms. Joanna Raynold Arthurton, General Manager of the SLSWMA along with staff and well-wishers of the collaborating agencies.
 
Speakers expressed gratitude to the Government of Taiwan for the funding while highlighting the importance of the new facility to the continued development of sustainable solid waste management practices on the island.
 
The Authority extends its gratitude to Ambassador Peter Chia-yen Chen, the team of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Rural Development and the team at the Deglos Sanitary Landfill led by Supervisor, Mr. Davis Poleon for their leadership and contributions to this important project.
