THE NEW WING WILL PROVIDE HOUSING FOR FEMALE FIREFIGHTERS.
A high-level delegation from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Crime Prevention and Persons with Disabilities, led by Permanent Secretary Dr. Elizabeth Bailey, Deputy Permanent Secretary Mr. Ricky Quinlan, and accompanied by Deputy Chief Fire Officer Mr. Thomas John, recently conducted a tour of ongoing construction works at the Soufriere Fire Station.
The focus of the visit was to assess the progress of the new wing being added to the facility, which will provide modern, comfortable housing for female firefighters. The addition marks a significant milestone in the station's history, as it continues to evolve to meet the needs of a diverse and growing workforce.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Mr. Thomas John spoke on the station’s history.
"When this station was originally constructed, it was built by male firefighters to serve an all-male team," he said. "However, as the Saint Lucia Fire Service has evolved and welcomed female firefighters into our ranks, it became clear that we needed to ensure that all personnel, regardless of gender, have access to modern and comfortable facilities."
The new wing, designed with the input of female firefighters, will provide spacious and comfortable accommodations that prioritize the well-being of staff. The barracks will be equipped with all necessary amenities to create an environment conducive to rest and recovery, ensuring that female firefighters can perform their duties with maximum efficiency.
For the female officers at the station, the completion of the new barracks is a long-awaited development.
"We are excited about the upcoming changes," said one of the female firefighters. "Having a space that meets our needs will not only improve our daily lives but also help foster a sense of inclusivity and equality within the service."
The Saint Lucia Fire Service continues to demonstrate its commitment to creating an inclusive environment for all its personnel. The new wing at the Soufriere Fire Station is expected to be completed shortly. The Ministry of Home Affairs remains dedicated to enhancing the capacity and capabilities of the Fire Service to better serve the citizens of Saint Lucia.
