MINISTER BAPTISTE EMPHASIZED THAT TAIWAN'S EXCLUSION UNDERMINES THE PRINCIPLES OF INCLUSIVITY AND FAIRNESS THAT THE UN STANDS FOR.
In his address to the 80th United Nations General Assembly, Honourable Alva Baptiste, Minister for External Affairs, International Trade, Civil Aviation, and Diaspora Affairs of Saint Lucia, called for Taiwan to be accorded its rightful place at the United Nations. Minister Baptiste emphasized that Taiwan's exclusion undermines the principles of inclusivity and fairness that the UN stands for.
The absence of Taiwan from the United Nations is primarily due to the one-China policy, which asserts that there is only one sovereign state under the name China, encompassing both mainland China and Taiwan. This policy has led to Taiwan's exclusion from the UN and its specialized agencies. Despite this, Taiwan continues to engage with the international community through various non-governmental and unofficial channels, advocating for its interests and contributing to global development.
Minister Baptiste highlighted Saint Lucia's commitment to supporting Taiwan's meaningful participation in international fora, underscoring the importance of representation for all nations in the pursuit of global peace and prosperity.
“Renewing our commitment to multilateralism also means that member states must take measures to reduce tensions and settle disputes in areas where, if not checked, conflict and war would prevail. It is for this reason that Saint Lucia renews calls for the United Nations to allow Taiwan to meaningfully participate in the UN system. And I state categorically, that UN Resolution 2758 of 1971 does not preclude Taiwan's inclusion and participation in the United Nations system.”
Taiwan, with a population of approximately 23.1 million as of mid-2025, stands as a testament to resilience and innovation. Its economy is underpinned by key sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, green energy, defense, and next-generation communications. These industries not only drive Taiwan's economic growth but also contribute significantly to global technological advancements.
Saint Lucia and Taiwan share a robust diplomatic relationship, marked by mutual respect and cooperation. This partnership encompasses various sectors, including trade, education, and technology. Taiwan's contributions to Saint Lucia's development are invaluable, and the two nations continue to collaborate closely to address global challenges.
