SAINT LUCIA HAS WITNESSED REMARKABLE PROGRESS IN ITS AGRICULTURE SECTOR AS THE COUNTRY EMBRACES FARM MECHANIZATION.
Saint Lucia has witnessed remarkable progress in its agriculture sector as the country embraces farm mechanization. The recent Small Machinery Expo, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Taiwan Technical Mission, showcased the transformative potential of mechanization in agriculture, empowering farmers across the nation.
The Small Machinery Expo was held on June 09, 2023, at the Ministry’s Demonstration Farm at Union with the aim to enhance efficiency in the production-distribution supply chain for the fruits and vegetables sector in Saint Lucia.
In highlighting the strong bond between the two nations H.E. Peter Chia-yen Chen, the Ambassador of the Republic of China, Taiwan to Saint Lucia, emphasized Taiwan's crucial role in strengthening international cooperation by supporting agricultural development through shared expertise, technology and vision.
"I still remember last year, Hon. Minister Prospere and I discussed how to use small machinery and technology to enhance efficiency in the agriculture sector and attract more young farmers. Today, I'm glad that we have come up with solutions, including four tillers and four cultivators that can help farmers break up hard and compact soil into a loose and smooth seedbed for planting. Technicians and extension officers in the Ministry of Agriculture will be trained in the use of this machinery, and every farmer can reach out to request these services," stated H.E. Peter Chia-yen Chen.
Through the introduction of autonomous farming techniques, farmers can now achieve increased crop yields while minimizing their efforts and reducing their impact on the environment.
Hon. Alfred Prospere, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security, and Rural Development expressed heartfelt appreciation for the collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Taiwan Technical Mission. He emphasized the transformative power of this machinery, envisioning a future where innovative machinery and practices take center stage in Saint Lucia's agricultural landscape.
"These innovative tools and advancements have the power to transform the way we cultivate our land, enhance efficiency, reduce labour, and boost agricultural yields. Their use must become the norm in the sector. Agriculture is an occupation of the mind, and I'm eager to see the sector move with the times. A competitive future can only exist when more and more technology is incorporated into everyday farming," remarked Hon. Alfred Prospere.
The Ministry of Agriculture's prioritization of sustainable mechanization in Agriculture will seek to address livelihood challenges, food security, climate change and showcase the country's commitment to fostering a more modern and resilient agricultural sector.
