Sustainable Development Minister, Hon. Dr. James Fletcher meets with President Serge Letchimy of Martinique, to discuss the upcoming climate change meeting between CARICOM member states and the President of France.

Saint Lucia’s Minister for Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology, Sen. Hon. James Fletcher, on Wednesday met with the President of the Regional Council of Martinique and member of the French National Assembly, Mr. Serge Letchimy, to discuss plans for the upcoming meeting between the President of France and CARICOM Heads of Government.

Dr. Fletcher, who is also the chair of the CARICOM Regional Task Force on Sustainable Development and the Regional Coordinating Committee on Climate Change, briefed Mr. Letchimy on the issues that were of critical importance for Caribbean negotiators in the ongoing climate change negotiations while President Letchimy shared the expectations of the French President of the upcoming high level meeting of Heads of Government.

Both President Letchimy and Minister Fletcher agreed that the meeting with President Hollande provided an excellent opportunity to focus attention on the critical issues of Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) leading up to the signing of a new international climate change agreement in Paris, France in December of this year at the 21st Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

President Francois Hollande is expected to meet with Heads of Government of CARICOM member states, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and the non-independent territories of the Caribbean on May 9 in Martinique.

Saint Lucia will be represented at that meeting by Prime Minister Hon. Kenny D. Anthony.
