THE EVENT IS OBSERVED ANNUALLY ON DEC. 10.
Saint Lucia joins the rest of the world in the observance of Human Rights Day, which is observed every year on the 10th of December — the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR is a milestone document that proclaims the inalienable rights which everyone is entitled to as a human regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.
According Director-General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay, "More than ever before, we are aware of what UNESCO’s mandate, to its broadest and fullest extent, can do to help us develop together the “common standard” defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. On this day, we invite all the players in every society to rally alongside UNESCO in order to give the future a more human face."
As part of efforts to observe the Anniversary of Human Rights, the Saint Lucia National Commission for UNESCO and its ASPnet schools observed the day under the theme DIGNITY, FREEDOM AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.
Students from the different ASPnet schools performed skits, songs and drama pieces to celebrate the theme, and the call to action #standup4humanrights.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is, according to UNESCO, a document that gives authority to all people. According to UNESCO, the principles set forth in the Declaration are just as applicable now as they were back in 1948. To strengthen the bond between all people, UNESCO affirms that we all must advocate for our own and others' rights and take concrete steps in our everyday lives to ensure the continued existence of the rights that serve to safeguard us all.
