Hon. James Fletcher discusses energy cooperation with the Chairman of the Clinton Climate Initiative

Hon. James Fletcher, Saint Lucia’s Energy Minister, on Tuesday 15
th April, 2014 met with Mr. Ira Magaziner, the Chairman of the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) and other officials of the CCI, to discuss collaboration between the Government of Saint Lucia and CCI on geothermal energy development, wind energy development and other sustainable energy initiatives.
The Clinton Climate Initiative is the organization established by President Bill Clinton to fight climate change around the world. It is headed by Ira Magaziner, who, from 1993 through to 1998, served as Senior Advisor to President Clinton for Policy Development at the White House.
The collaboration between the Clinton Climate Initiative and the Government of Saint Lucia was born out of a meeting between Hon. James Fletcher and Mr. Magaziner at a United Nations Sustainable Energy for All Conference that was held in May, 2012.
Later that year, the Government of Saint Lucia and the Clinton Foundation signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding agreeing to cooperate on energy-related matters.
At Tuesday’s meeting, the Clinton Climate Initiative agreed to provide high-level support to the Government of Saint Lucia on the development of the geothermal energy facility in Soufriere and on a wind farm development on the east coast of the island.
The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology will also benefit from the tremendous experience and technical expertise of the Clinton Climate Initiative on the retrofitting of street lights to more energy-efficient and longer lasting LED lights.
