The Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) will host a handover ceremony for two HomeBiogas units as part of the Recycle Organics Programme, strengthening the College’s efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and innovative waste management practices.
The ceremony will take place on Thursday, March 12, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at the College’s Farm in Mabouya Valley, Dennery.
The Recycle Organics Programme originated in Chile in 2017 with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the solid waste sector. In March 2023, the Government of Canada supported the expansion of the initiative to four Caribbean countries: Belize, Saint Lucia, Guyana, and Grenada.
The programme aims to accelerate methane mitigation efforts, strengthen regulatory frameworks, build capacity, and encourage knowledge exchange across the region.
Through its partnership with the Recycle Organics programme, SALCC is working to restart anaerobic digestion at its College Farm through the installation of a modular system designed to treat pig waste.
The College previously operated an anaerobic digestion system for more than twenty years; however, the system is no longer functional. Following an assessment of replacement options, the programme selected the HomeBiogas system due to its cost-effectiveness, ease of operation, and scalability.
As part of the initiative in Saint Lucia, Recycle Organics will present SALCC with two HomeBiogas units along with the supporting infrastructure needed to capture and utilize the by-products of anaerobic digestion. These include methane gas and liquid and solid fertilizer, which can be used for applications such as heating, agro-processing, and crop production.
The installation will also establish the SALCC Farm as a demonstration site for sustainable organic waste management practices, providing valuable learning and research opportunities for students and the wider community.
