The Salvation Army aims to distribute 1,000 Christmas hampers this year, to families islandwide.

The Salvation Army has launched its 2016 Kettle Drive which aims to bring Christmas cheer to 1,000 families across Saint Lucia.

During the launch ceremony, Malcolm Burns, chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board thanked a number of corporate entities that support the work of the Salvation Army annually. He said the target for the Salvation Army this year is to distribute 1,000 Christmas hampers to families island-wide.

Salvation Army Childcare Services pre-schoolers treated the audience at the launch to a rendition of the songs, "The Virgin Mary had a Baby Boy," and "Put Jesus in Your Christmas." Students from the Community After School Program (CASP) Monchy Orchestra, also performed a selection of Christmas songs.

The Salvation Army's Christmas Kettle drive is an annual initiative of the Salvation Army aimed at fostering the spirit of giving during the festive season. Each year the kettles are situated in populated locations throughout Saint Lucia, and are characterized by the merry ringing of a bell to call attention to passers-by. Public donations and funds are collected in support of the Salvation Army's efforts during the Christmas season.

The kettle bell tradition dates back to 1891 and is entirely dependent on the generosity of the public to provide financial assistance, counseling, food, clothing, toys, and shelter for less fortunate persons year round.
