MP CONVEYS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CEMETERY AS A CORNERSTONE IN THE COMMUNITY'S TAPESTRY OF MEMORY.
Recently, the community of Mon Repos gathered to witness the sod turning ceremony for a state-of-the-art modern cemetery.
The sod turning was attended by various dignitaries, including the Minister for Housing and Local Government, Hon. Richard Frederick, and the Parliamentary Representative for Micoud North, Hon. Jeremiah Norbert.
The significance of the modern cemetery project was eloquently conveyed by the Member of Parliament for Micoud (north), as he emphasized that this new sanctuary will hold the community’s memories.
“This sod turning ceremony is the beginning of what we expect to be a modern sanctuary for remembrance, a haven for reflection, and a cornerstone in our community’s tapestry of memory,” he said. “This new cemetery will represent not just brick and mortar but a compassionate response to a growing need. This cemetery is a testament to our collective reverence for the departed and a glimpse into the future where grief finds solace and respect.”
The economic benefits of the project were not overlooked, as Minister with responsibility for Local Government and Housing, Hon Richard Frederick, spoke to the project’s ability to create employment opportunities and provide a new revenue stream for the Micoud North Constituency Council.
“If the Council works well, Mon Repos can develop around the proceeds of the cemetery,” he said. “It is my desire to ensure that central government does not get any money from the proceeds of the cemetery, but that the councilors are responsible enough to manage the proceeds, develop the cemetery, and use the excess cash to develop the community and constituency. That is the direction in which we are moving so that there is less reliance on central government. Thus, there will be less bureaucracy and more productivity.”
Acknowledging the collaborative efforts that led to the moment, Minister Norbert expressed gratitude to the visionary minds, architects, designers, and countless individuals who dedicated themselves to the project. Notably, he thanked those who have been involved in the administration of the previous cemetery, and recognized their own contributions to the community.
