by UN Barbados and OECS
THE DEPARTMENT OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UN WILL HOLD A JINGLE COMPETITION AS PART OF EFFORTS TO BOOST AWARENESS AND VISIBILITY OF THE SDGS.

Background
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all members of United Nations in 2015, developed 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address global challenges related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. The 17 Goals are all interconnected and seek to leave no one behind. The 2024 SDG report, notes that with only six years remaining, current progress falls far short of what is required to meet the 17 SDGs. Therefore, the need for scaled-up action cannot be overemphasized.

Aim
The United Nations has partnered with the Department of Sustainable Development, Republic Bank EC Limited, Sandals Resorts, FLOW, and Massy Stores, “to develop a jingle which promotes the SDGs in the Saint Lucian context, and calls on Saint Lucians to take urgent action to accelerate progress on the SDGs.”

Jingle Competition
Criteria

  1. The jingle competition is open to young persons, ages 13-17.
  2. The jingle should ideally be no more than 60 seconds, in duration.
  3. It should focus on the SDGs, in a local context and how Saint Lucia as a Small Island Developing State can contribute to the realization of the SDGs.
  4. It should be an original composition, not previously heard.
  5. It should have an engaging and harmonious blend of music and lyrics.
  6. The jingle should be submitted electronically to: lorraine.nicholas@un.org no later than October 6th, 2024.

  1. Relevance: The extent to which the jingle is relatable to and raises awareness of the SDGs (max 20 points).
  2. Effectiveness: The message being conveyed must be readily understood and underscore the ‘call to action’ to accelerate progress on the SDGs (max 20 points).
  3. Appeal: The attractiveness and attention-grabbing nature of the jingle. Is the melody easy to sing along to? Are the lyrics catchy? Is there a ‘hook’ that will stick in the minds of listeners and have them singing along? (max 20 points)?
  4. Creativity: The extent to which youth use their knowledge and imagination to produce the jingle. The ability to take complex concepts and break them down into simple language that the average person can understand and relate to (max 20 points).
