The late QC, Hilford Deterville’s body lies in repose

Mr. Deterville mentored several notable lawyers in practice of the law, among them Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, and Appeal Court Judge Hon. Mario Michel.

The body of the late Hilford David Alexander Deterville, QC, lies in repose at the House of Parliament today, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., ahead of his official funeral on Saturday, Dec. 20.

Viewing of the body will be open to the public from 12 noon, following a schedule of official visits from Governor General Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, the Chief Justice, former Heads of Government, and other officials. Official visits begin at 9 a.m.

Mr. Deterville was described as a “fiery platform speaker” who had knowledge of a wide range of socio-economic topics.

He attended St. Mary’s College, after which he taught Mathematics at the newly-opened Vieux Fort Secondary School in 1964. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, the current Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, was one of his students.

Mr. Deterville later pursued Economics and Mathematics at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Jamaica.

He was one of the first Caribbean luminaries to study law at UWI, and according to his biography, had a “determined, self-confident, tenacious, and disciplined character.” He later established his own law firm.

Over the years, about thirty graduates from West Indian Law institutions were trained at his firm. He thus mentored several notable lawyers in practice of the law, among them Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, Appeal Court Judge Hon. Mario Michel, Tyrone Chong and Nicholas John.

The funeral for the late Hilford Deterville will be held at the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception at 2 p.m.
