THE ROLE OF TEACHERS IS ESSENTIAL TO EDUCATIONAL ADVANCEMENT AND MODERN DEVELOPMENT.
World Teachers’ Day is observed annually on 5 October to celebrate teachers around the globe. This day recognises the essential role of teachers in educational advancement and the importance of their contribution to the development of man and modern society. Not only does this World Teachers’ Day celebrate how teachers are transforming education, it also reflects on the support they need to fully deploy their talent and vocation, and to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally.
Teaching is the greatest act of selflessness and a manifestation of future optimism. Being a teacher provides the unique opportunity to make a transformative and lasting impact on the lives of others, contributing to shaping sustainable futures and offering personal fulfilment. However, the world faces an unparalleled global teacher shortage which is exacerbated by a decline in their working conditions and status.
The 2023 theme The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage aims to put the importance of stopping the decline in the number of teachers and then starting to increase that number at the top of the global agenda.
It is imperative that we as a nation join the worldwide movement in advocating for a dignified and valued teaching profession. It is our responsibility to implement the necessary strategies to attract, retain and motivate teachers and all educators. Let each of us recognise, appreciate and actively support the most noble of professions. The Saint Lucia National Commission for UNESCO wishes all teachers and educators a happy World Teacher’s Day!
