THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH CONTINUES WORKSHOPS THAT WILL GUIDE THE IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs remains committed to the implementation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Saint Lucia. A coordinated approach toward implementation was demonstrated following the recent establishment of a UHC unit spearheaded by the newly-appointed Director, Dr. Alisha Eugene-Ford.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs, Jenny Daniel, reiterated the focus and benefits of Universal Health Coverage for Saint Lucians.

“Universal Health Coverage speaks to accessibility of care, quality of health services and equality in the delivery of these health services with a focus on preventative healthcare. However, the attainment of Universal Health Coverage must be preceded by the strengthening of our health service delivery systems through infrastructural development, the establishment of quality assurance standards and licensing of institutions, provision and upgrading of biomedical equipment, strengthening of databases for patient health information and development of human resource capacity for health,” Ms. Daniel said.

Dr. Alisha Eugene-Ford said UHC implementation will be achieved through phases.

“We will start in small phases with a view to improve what already exists and ensure that we provide the services the public needs. We want all of Saint Lucia to be aware of the process because we know that at the end, all will benefit from Universal Health Coverage.”

The Minister for Health, Hon. Moses Jn Baptiste, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to implement Universal Health Coverage and ensure that every individual receives health services without suffering financial hardships.

“We are hoping that government can take concrete steps to make Universal Health Coverage a reality in the future. We know that the implementation of Universal Health Coverage is challenging and that the planning must be thorough. Our commitment, therefore, must be intense and the financing of it must be assured,” the minister stated.

At present, the Ministry of Health continues to undertake a series of workshops that will guide the implementation of UHC in Saint Lucia.
