Myriad opportunities abound to study at the prestigious tertiary-level institution.

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus at Morne Fortune will host an Open Day today, Feb. 12, as part of its annual UWI Outreach Program which began on Feb. 10.

The activity will feature faculty from the University of the West Indies, who will provide information on studying at UWI, and options for financial aid.

According to Garth Jones from the UWI Admissions Office, St. Augustine, UWI offers several performance-based and need-based scholarships.

“We have the UWI Open Scholarship where persons are given awards based on CAPE results. If you do not get into that, you apply for a scholarship after completing your first year, based on your first year results; and that covers your tuition, boarding and related expenses," he said.

"While you are at the university we also have a scholarship and bursary program where companies in Trinidad will sponsor you based on your performance and financial need and that award ranges from $3000 - $50,000 in some programs.”

This year, a total of 41 students from Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Jamaica, Saint Kitts, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and Trinidad and Tobago were recipients of scholarship awards.

According to Jones, among the advantages to studying at UWI were competitive costs and the opportunities offered to students of the University.

“Studying at the University of the West Indies is actually a little bit cheaper, than going to a foreign universities and incurring that expense, we also have exchange agreements with Universities in North America, in the UK, and as far as Japan. You can study at these universities for a year or a semester, and your tuition is whatever you pay at the campus that you are attached to, so you will not incur extra tuition fees,” Mr. Jones said.

Open Day activities at the UWI Open Campus culminate today. The activity begins at 9:30 a.m.
