FACES OF CANCER IS THE RECIPIENT OF PROCEEDINGS FROM THE "KICK FOR A CURE" ANNUAL SPORTING INITIATIVE.
Veterans in Sports Inc. recently made a monetary contribution to Faces of Cancer, Saint Lucia following a successful collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs in hosting the 2023 initiative “Kick for a Cure.” The program strategically held in the month of October aims to raise awareness and support breast cancer programs.
Alvin Malaykhan, the CEO of Veterans in Sports Inc. collaborated with the Ministry of Health and Faces of Cancer to establish Kick for a Cure. The initiative, now in its fourth year, has helped raise significant monetary contributions for Faces of Cancer. Malaykhan said the aim of the organization is to provide opportunities for people to participate in safe, healthy, and inclusive sporting activities while creating a space for sports development.
Dorothy Phillip, president of Faces of Cancer, Saint Lucia, said the contribution will assist with the expansion of the organization’s outreach program.
Chief Medical officer, Dr. Sharon Belmar George said the initiative also provides a platform to raise awareness on men’s health. She asserted that based on data, men are less likely to access health services and visit healthcare providers for screening.
The act of philanthropy also provides an opportunity to reach individuals at the community levels. During the sporting event, health educators and responders profited the opportunity to conduct cancer screenings and educate community members on maintaining healthy lifestyles.
The Ministry of Health calls for more public-private partnerships to increase avenues for support in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of non-communicable diseases.
