The museum and art gallery is intended to transform the lower Chaussee Road area into a center for the arts.

The Walcott Place and Grass Street Urban Enhancement Project is near completion.

The project entailed the reconstruction of Nobel laureate Derek Walcott's childhood home to serve as a museum and gallery.

The Walcott Place Project is intended to transform the lower Chaussee Road area into a center for the arts, and serve as a catalyst for the regeneration of the community.

At a  Jan. 2015 sod turning ceremony, Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy said there was an urgent need to re-energize the area by tying it to the broader economic activity of Castries.

The project is spearheaded by the Saint Lucia National Trust and the Ministry for Physical Development, Housing and Urban Renewal, and funded by the Government of Saint Lucia and the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

There are also plans to construct an Arts Centre on adjacent properties that will feature exhibition space, a150-seat training space, an experimental black-box theatre, art rooms, a reference library, a gift and book shop and a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating.
