The ‘Programme in Economic and Public Policy (PEPP)’ is a Master’s programme sponsored jointly by the JOINT Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Programme and the Asian Development Bank, that offers scholarships to mid-career professionals from developing and transition countries who have had a solid university education and working experience in areas related to policy making.  Using an interdisciplinary approach, the PEPP provides the scholars with the training and the necessary skills for the conception, design and implementation of development policies in the time frame of eighteen (18) months resulting in a Master’s degree that is internationally recognized.  It endeavours to contribute to the creation of an international community of highly trained professionals primed to deal with the challenges of economic and social development.

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:

  1. be a national of a World Bank (WB) member country that is eligible to receive WB financing;
  2.  hold a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with superior academic achievement earned more than three (3) years before the Scholarship Application Deadline and have completed 16 years of school education (up to undergraduate level);
  3. be employed in a paid full-time position at the time of the Scholarship Application Deadline unless the applicant is from a country identified in the WB’s “Harmonized List of Fragile Situations”;
  4. have, by the time of Scholarship Application Deadline, at least three (3) years of recent full-time paid professional experience acquired in development-related work after a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent;
  5. not be an Executive Director, his/her alternate, staff of the World Bank Group (the World Bank, International Development Association, International Finance Corporation, Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, and International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes), or a close relative of the aforementioned;
  6. not have received any scholarship funding to earn a Graduate degree or its equivalent from any sources funded by the Government of Japan;
  7. have a strong background in economics and associated quantitative tools (linear algebra, calculus and basic statistics), in the case of the Couse in Economics Policy, highly recommended;
  8. demonstrate proficiency in oral and written English communication skills by submitting either of the following:
    1. score of standardized test such as IELTS/TOEFL/TOEIC

OR

  1. other evidence such as a letter from the university or current working place, as deemed appropriate by the Graduate School;
  1. demonstrate verbal and quantitative skills by submitting either of the following:
    1. score of standardized test such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

OR

  1. other evidence such as a letter from the university or current working place, as deemed appropriate by the Graduate School; and
  1. be in good health with respect to the capacity to be a productive scholar for the duration of the Graduate Programme, as certified by a medical doctor.

 

BENEFITS

The benefits cover:

  1. round trip air travel (economy class) between home country and Japan, plus a travel allowance of US$500 for each one-way trip;
  2. full tuition and fees;
  3. a monthly living stipend;
  4. national health insurance;
  5. personal accident insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research; and
  6. other programme expenses such as Japanese lessons, educational trips, internship, etc.

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • TOEFL Score or Equivalent Proof of English Proficiency
  • GRE Score or Equivalent Proof of Skills
  • Medical certificate
  • Photograph (40 mm x 30 mm)
  • Three or Four letters of Recommendation
  • Statement of Eligibility
