The Department of Education, Innovation and Gender Relations informs of the call for applicants for the fellowship for the UNEP – Georgetown Law Centre Global Environmental and Sustainability Law Fellowship for Environmental Lawyers practicing in the public service.  Successful fellows will be given the opportunity to pursue studies leading to a Masters of Law Degree (LL.M.) in Environmental Law at Georgetown Law's Campus in Washington, D.C. commencing summer of 2017.

The Fellowship programme will provide opportunities for ful fellows to strengthen their environmental capacity while engaging in research and gaining practical experience in the practice of environmental law.  Fellows will also collaborate in Georgetown's Science Technology and International Affairs program in the School of Foreign Service.

 

Criteria for Granting Scholarships

To be eligible the applicant must:

  • be a citizen of Saint Lucia;
  • be a lawyer employed by government working on matters related to environmental law, natural resources law, or associated fields of law; 
  • have strong English language skills both written and oral;
  • be proficient in using computers for drafting papers and conducting research;
  • maintain health insurance while on the fellowship programme; and
  • commit to return to their home country to continue working in public sector environmental law and policy for no less than three years or as may otherwise be determined by the releasing government.

 

Value of the Award

The scholarship covers:

  • full tuition;
  • a modest stipend for living expenses; and
  • travel.

 

Application Procedure

  1. Completed Application Form and required essays;
  2. Current Resume;
  3. Two Letters of Recommendation;
  4. A Letter supporting your application for training from your Permanent Secretary;
  5. Official Law School Transcript which should be sent to Georgetown University Law Center.  An unofficial copy of your transcript can be attached to the rest of your application.  An offer will not be made until the OFFICIAL law school transcript is received.  An explanation of the grading and ranking system is required.

 

Online applications must be completed and submitted no later than Monday January 17th 2017.  Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Deadline for the submission of aplication packages to the Human Resource Development Unit of the Department of Education, Innovation and Gender Relations is Friday December 2nd 2016.  Incomplete or late submissions of application packages will not be accepted.
