The Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI), on behalf of Saint Lucia’s Department of Sustainable Development, of the Ministry of Education, Sustainable Development, Innovation,
Science, Technology and Vocational Training, is seeking a Community Engagement Officer to play a pivotal role in advancing an initiative to promote nature-based solutions (NbS) across key economic sectors. This role is central to fostering strong connections with local communities, stakeholders, and partners, ensuring the successful integration of NbS into tourism, food production, and urban
development.

About the Role
The Community Engagement Officer will play a pivotal role in advancing this project. The position focuses on fostering strong relationships with local communities, stakeholders, and partners to promote the integration of nature-based solutions into key economic sectors.
The Community Engagement Officer’s key responsibilities will include outreach and raising awareness among communities, serving as the primary liaison between the project team and stakeholders, coordinating and supporting the implementation of community-led NbS projects, and collaborating with stakeholders to facilitate the adoption of NbS in tourism, food production, and urban development and assisting with monitoring and evaluation. Some key responsibilities
- Lead outreach and awareness efforts to engage and educate communities on NbS.
- Serve as the primary liaison between the project team and stakeholders, fostering collaboration and trust.
- Coordinate and support the implementation of community-led NbS projects, ensuring impactful and sustainable outcomes.
- Work closely with stakeholders to facilitate the adoption of NbS within key economic sectors.
- Assist with monitoring and evaluation to measure project effectiveness and impact.
Some key requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Natural Resource Management, Forest Management, Environmental Science or a related field.
- A combination of any of the following: an understanding of public awareness strategies, meeting and workshop facilitation skills, good report writing skills, good interpersonal skills, knowledge of biodiversity, natural resources, protected areas, ecosystems- approach, land use management, agroforestry, and reforestation.
- Minimum of three years’ experience in community level work.
- Experience in influencing, developing, and implementing biodiversity conservation, protected areas, and/or land use policies, strategies, and plans, preferably in Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
- Strong communication and presentation skills in English, and an ability to prepare appropriate and timely reports to multiple audiences.
